WASHINGTON DC, March 22, 2024 | The United States Department of Justice has filed a lawsuit against technology behemoth Apple, accusing the company of monopolizing the smartphone market to uphold the dominance of its phone devices.
The lawsuit, filed on March 21, 2024, alleges that Apple’s practices have had adverse effects on consumers and third-party developers, spanning various aspects such as messaging services and application distribution systems.
According to statements from the Department of Justice, Apple leverages its monopoly power to extract higher fees from consumers, developers, content creators, artists, publishers, small businesses, and merchants, among others.
The DOJ contends that Apple employs a range of tactics to maintain the success of the iPhone, even if it means stifling fair competition. These tactics purportedly include imposing restrictive contracts on developers, obstructing the development of rival technologies, and limiting access to essential phone functions.
Jonathan Kanter, Chief of the Department of Justice Antitrust Division, highlighted Apple’s response to competitive threats over the years, characterizing it as a series of restrictive contractual rules and restrictions aimed at extracting higher prices from consumers and thwarting competitive rivals in technology.
In response to the lawsuit, Apple defended its practices, arguing that the legal action poses a threat to innovation and sets a dangerous precedent for government intervention in technology design. Apple spokesman Fred Sainz emphasized the company’s belief that the lawsuit is unfounded and vowed to vigorously defend against it.
United States Attorney General Merrick Garland expressed concerns about Apple’s messaging strategy, particularly citing the disparity between iMessage and other platforms in terms of features and encryption. Garland noted that this contributes to a lock-in effect, discouraging users from switching to competing devices.
