UPDF and Uganda Police in joint anti-terror crackdown

In a joint operation between the Uganda People’s Defence Force (UPDF) and police in Nabweru North, Nansana Division, Nansana Municipality, Wakiso District, six individuals were arrested for allegedly being in possession of Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs). The suspects have been identified as Hamidu Ssekidde, Muhammad Kalyango, Abdul Katamba, Arafat Ssali, Emmanuel Asiimwe and Hamidu Muyondi.

According to the deputy spokesperson of Kampala Metropolitan Police, ASP Luke Owoyesigyire, the explosives were intended to be used within the city center to wreak havoc and accentuate disarray. The exhibits recovered from the scene include 12 wine bottles, wielding binder nails, charcoal dust, sugar, a jerrycan of petrol, matchboxes, blasting cup, dynamite and candlewick.

The possession of explosives is considered a grave offense under Ugandan law and is governed by the Explosives Act (Chapter 298). This Act was established in 1936 with the objective of regulating the manufacture, storage, sale, transportation, importation, exportation and usage of explosives in Uganda to ensure the health and safety of its citizens.

The arrests are indicative of the government’s, along with its security forces unwavering commitment and tireless efforts  to prevent acts of terrorism and to protect and safeguard all citizens. This incident serves as a stark reminder of the significance of cooperation between security forces and the public in the fight against terrorism and in ensuring public safety

The suspects are currently being held in custody and will face legal action as per the provisions of the Explosives Act (Chapter 298).
