KAMPALA, January 31, 2024 | Excitement is building up as the official commissioning of the new Supreme Court and Appeal buildings is scheduled for February 9, 2023. The much-anticipated announcement was made by Pius Bigirimana, the Permanent Secretary to the Judiciary, during a tour by Members of Parliament from the Legal and Parliamentary Affairs Committee.
Bigirimana shared the eagerly awaited news, assuring the Members of Parliament that the President of the Republic of Uganda, Yoweri Museveni, will grace the occasion as the Official Chief Guest of the day.
As the parliamentary delegation toured the new judicial facilities, Chairperson Robina Gureme Rwakojjo expressed her admiration for the impressive buildings. She commended the Permanent Secretary for supervising the project efficiently, ensuring high-quality work, and utilizing space effectively.
Ms. Rwakojjo reiterated the committee’s support for the Judiciary, emphasizing that the new courthouses are a testament to the value for taxpayers’ money. She encouraged Parliament to draw lessons from this successful project.
In a spirit of gratitude, the Chief Registrar of the Judiciary, Sarah Langa Sui, extended thanks to the committee for touring the court premises and for their unwavering support.
Among the dignitaries in attendance were Under Secretary Ms. Maureen Kasande, Judiciary Public Relations Officer, HW James Ereemye Jumire Mawanda, and Commissioner of Engineering and Technical Services, Dr. Christopher Ebal, all gracing the occasion.
The journey to this significant milestone began on December 5, 2019, with a historic groundbreaking ceremony for the construction of the seven-storey twin appellate court buildings. The project, valued at Shs. 63.9 billion, aimed to provide modern courtrooms, chambers for justices, a gym, and a restaurant.
