Ugandan Pre-Medical Interns Sue Government Over Failed Deployment

Pre-medical interns in Uganda have taken legal action against the government due to the prolonged delay in their deployment. They have filed a petition with the High Court, seeking permission to file a representative lawsuit against the government. The interns argue that the Ministry of Health has violated their right to pursue further education and obtain higher qualifications in their respective medical fields.

In their legal petition, the interns are requesting a court order to compel the government to immediately deploy them to government hospitals for their internship training. Currently, more than 2,000 pre-medical interns find themselves in limbo after being informed by the government that the Ministry of Health lacks the necessary funds to facilitate their training at the moment. Additionally, the interns are protesting against the government’s proposal to make intern doctors bear the cost of their own training, which goes against existing laws.
