KAMPALA, March 14, 2024 | The International Criminal Court (ICC) has appointed Justice Solomy Balungi Bossa, formerly a Court of Appeal Judge in Uganda, to serve in the court’s Appeal Chambers. Justice Bossa joins a panel of judges in the Appeal Division, including Tomoko Akane, Luz del Carmen Ibáñez Carranza, Gocha Lordkipanidze, and Erdenebalsuren Damdin.
The ICC’s Appeal Chambers play a crucial role in the judicial process, tasked with reviewing decisions made at an appellate level, including judgments and sentencing decisions. The chamber holds the authority to order a new trial if deemed necessary, ensuring fairness and accountability in the pursuit of justice.
In a statement issued on March 8, 2024, the ICC presidency outlined the composition of various divisions within the court. The Trial Division, responsible for adjudicating cases brought before the ICC, consists of judges Kimberly Prost, Joanna Korner, Miatta Maria Samba, Althea Violet Alexis-Windsor, Keebong Paek, Nicolas Guillou, and Beti Hohler.
The Pre-Trial Division, which handles preliminary examinations and investigations, includes judges Rosario Salvatore Aitala, Reine Alapini-Gansou, MarÃa del Socorro Flores Liera, Sergio Gerardo Ugalde GodÃnez, Iulia Motoc, and Haykel Ben-Mahfoudh.
Specifically addressing the allocation of cases, the statement outlines the assignment of situations to different chambers. Notably, the situation in the Republic of Uganda will be assigned to Pre-Trial Chamber III, comprising Judges Althea Violet Alexis-Windsor, Iulia Motoc, and Haykel Ben-Mahfoudh.
