KAMPALA, March 22, 2024 | The Uganda Law Society has voiced serious concerns regarding the safety of social media activists amidst ongoing threats directed at individuals demanding accountability from Parliament. Dr. Jimmy Spire Ssentogo, Agathar Atuhaire, Tony Natif, and Godwin Tokyo are among those reportedly facing intimidation for their advocacy against corruption scandals, particularly those involving the Office of the Speaker of Parliament, Anita Annet Among.
Bernard Oundo, President of the Uganda Law Society, emphasized that in democracies, citizens have the right to demand accountability from their leaders, and Uganda is no exception. He highlighted the significant role played by social media activists, such as Ssentogo, Natif, Atuhaire, and Tokyo, who have been utilizing platforms like X (formerly Twitter) to push for transparency and accountability within Parliament.
Oundo condemned the threats and intimidation aimed at silencing citizens’ calls for accountability. He called for a prompt investigation into the threats and urged authorities to hold the perpetrators accountable. Additionally, Oundo called upon leaders to embrace criticism and respond to legitimate concerns, underscoring the importance of transparency and accountability in a democratic society.
On March 21, 2024, the Leader of the Opposition in Parliament, Joel Ssenyonyi, urged the Speaker of Parliament not to divert attention from corruption allegations by raising issues related to homosexuality. Ssenyonyi refuted claims made by the Speaker, highlighting discrepancies in the timing of her absence from Parliament and the disbursement of funds. He emphasized that the focus should remain on addressing corruption allegations rather than engaging in unrelated controversies.
The ongoing threats against social media activists highlight the challenges faced by individuals advocating for accountability in Uganda. As the nation grapples with issues of corruption and governance, the Uganda Law Society’s condemnation of intimidation emphasizes the importance of protecting freedom of expression and ensuring a safe environment for civic engagement.
