ENTEBBE, Uganda | The Imperial Beach Hotel in Entebbe witnessed a gathering of legal minds and dignitaries as the Uganda Law Society (ULS) held its annual general meeting today. The event was marked by a reflection on the society’s remarkable milestones over the past year.
President Bernad Oundo kicked off the proceedings by highlighting the society’s achievements, showcasing their commitment to advancing the legal profession and serving the community. One significant accomplishment was the establishment of the Healthcare & Benevolent Fund, demonstrating their dedication to the welfare of members.
Another standout achievement was the steady progress in the construction of the ULS House. Senior Counsel James Mukasa Sebugenyi, Chairperson of the ULS House Committee, expressed gratitude to members for their dedication and sacrifices, emphasizing that the construction’s superstructure had been completed.
Mentorship and professional development of young advocates were also at the forefront, with the successful Young Lawyers mentorship series and the Young Lawyers symposium. These initiatives underscored the society’s commitment to nurturing future legal talents.
In a nod to the digital age, the ULS reported substantial strides in the digitization of its services. Members can now enjoy benefits like real-time Continuing Legal Education (CLE) points accreditation, and convenient online payment options.
Before the annual meeting, a pre-AGM conference welcomed Honourable Justice Oscar Kihika as the keynote speaker. Justice Kihika, reminiscing about his time as ULS president when the society had only 200 members, celebrated its exponential growth to over 4000 members today. He urged fellow advocates to seize the abundant opportunities presented by Uganda’s burgeoning economy.
Attorney General Hon. Kiryowa Kiwanuka commended the ULS for its efforts in stakeholder engagement, particularly through the Bar-Bench Forum. This platform has become a hub for open discussions and solutions for members. He also praised the ULS for its digitization efforts and shared that the government is working on a mobile application containing all of Uganda’s laws, set to be accessible by year-end. Furthermore, he highlighted his commitment to ensuring a timely dispensation of justice, particularly in civil cases.
As the annual general meeting concluded, it was clear that the Uganda Law Society is not only focused on legal excellence but also on the well-being and professional growth of its members. With a commitment to serving both the legal community and the nation at large, the ULS is poised to continue making significant contributions to Uganda’s legal landscape in the years to come.
