“Former US President Donald Trump has launched a legal battle against his former lawyer, Michael Cohen. Trump is seeking at least $500 million in damages, accusing Cohen of violating a confidentiality agreement and ethical standards for lawyers. Trump also claims that Cohen spread false information about him with malicious intent.
The lawsuit, filed in Miami, cites Cohen’s publication of two books, a podcast series, and media appearances as evidence that he sought to profit from his role. In response, Cohen’s spokesman, Lanny Davis, stated that the lawsuit would not deter Cohen’s cooperation with prosecutors in the criminal case against Trump.
This latest legal action by Trump is seen as another attempt to use the legal system against his political enemies. It also highlights the breakdown of the relationship between Trump and a once-loyal aide.
The charges against Trump relate to falsified internal business records used to disguise payments made during the 2016 presidential campaign. These payments were allegedly made to silence claims of extramarital sexual encounters.
