KAMPALA, November 20, 2023 | The High Court in Kampala has scheduled the trial of Charles Olimu, popularly known as Sipapa, and his wife Shamira Rukia Nakiyemba for charges of aggravated robbery and money laundering. The couple is accused of robbing six South Sudanese nationals, making away with cash and valuables exceeding $450,000 in August 2022.
According to the prosecution, Sipapa, along with others still at large, allegedly broke into the home of South Sudanese businessman Jacob Arok Mul on the night of August 29, 2022, in Bunga-Kawuku, Makindye division, Kampala. It is reported that a substance rendering the victims unconscious was used as the couple seized $429,000, two mobile phones, an iPhone, a Samsung TV, and an Apple MacBook, among other items.
On the same night, five other South Sudanese individuals residing at the same location—Mary Ateng, Chol Ateng, Deng Arok, Abig Yar, and James Manyok—also fell victim to a similar robbery, losing iPhones, laptops, gold jewelry, and cash.
Upon the victims’ report, the police initiated an investigation, tracing an iCloud signal from a stolen iPhone to Sipapa’s residence in Buwate, Kira Municipality, Wakiso District. Recovered items at the scene included $70,000, four iPhones, three laptops, gold jewelry, and two car number plates.
It was further revealed that the accused couple had purchased a new air compressor, using it to re-spray a stolen jeep. The police subsequently arrested Sipapa and Nakiyemba, charging them with six counts of aggravated robbery and money laundering.
The trial is slated for December 18 and 19, 2023, at the High Court Criminal Division in Kampala, with High Court Judge Micheal Elubu presiding. Assisting the court will be two appointed assessors, Ms Juliet Kasiidwa and Mr Joseph Wasidi. If convicted of aggravated robbery, the couple faces a maximum sentence of death, and for money laundering, a fine not less than Shs 50 million or imprisonment not exceeding 15 years, or both.
Sipapa, a well-known socialite in Uganda dealing in gold, cars, and music promotion, has gained attention for his philanthropic acts, distributing money to crowds on the streets. However, he has been entangled in various controversies and legal clashes, including accusations of domestic violence, tax evasion, and political affiliations.
Nakiyemba, a designer and Sipapa’s wife of over three years, has been actively involved in his charitable missions and public appearances, accompanying him on his ventures. The upcoming trial casts a spotlight on the intersection of celebrity and legal accountability in Uganda, leaving many to ponder the unfolding chapters of this high-profile case.
