Davis Byanyima, a young man arrested for suspected theft, in a daring act reminiscent of action movies, managed to escape from police custody while being escorted. His audacious escape has resulted in serious charges under section 109 of the Penal Code Act. If found guilty, he could face significant time behind bars.

On June 9, 2023, Davis Byanyima was arrested for allegedly stealing 32 kilograms of coffee belonging to Yokasi Burihwari. He was detained at Kashangura Police post in Kagongo division, Ibanda Municipality. However, during a brief moment, as police were escorting him for a short break, Byanyima managed to flee. He swiftly disappeared into a nearby coffee plantation, successfully evading the police despite warning shots being fired.

Byanyima’s luck eventually ran out as police tracked him down three days later in Kitooma, Nyakatookye. He was apprehended from his hideout and subsequently transferred to Ibanda Central Police Station, where he was charged with escaping from lawful custody.

In a recent court appearance before Magistrate Esther Murungi on July 25, Police Constable Abel Waiswa testified about the daring escape. The court found sufficient evidence to proceed with the case, and Byanyima will face trial in two weeks to defend himself against the charges.
