LONDON, UK | Prince Harry, the Duke of Sussex, has faced a legal setback in his ongoing efforts to secure police protection for himself and his family during visits to the United Kingdom. The 39-year-old royal argued that he and his family should have automatic security whenever they visit the UK from their home in California, especially after the authorities stripped away this right in February 2020, following his decision to step back from official royal duties with his wife, Meghan Markle.
In a ruling on Wednesday, High Court judge Peter Lane upheld the decision by the UK government and the Executive Committee for the Protection of Royalty and Public Figures (RAVEC) to downgrade Harry’s security. Judge Lane found no unlawfulness in the decision-making process, stating that it was not irrational or procedurally unfair. However, Prince Harry intends to appeal against this decision, seeking a fair and lawful application of RAVEC’s own rules.
“The Duke is not asking for preferential treatment, but for a fair and lawful application of RAVEC’s own rules, ensuring that he receives the same consideration as others in accordance with RAVEC’s own written policy,” a legal spokesperson stated.
Prince Harry’s lawyers argued against the 2020 decision, emphasizing his need for police security to ensure the safety of his children while they are on UK soil. Despite offering to cover the costs of security, Harry’s bid was rejected by the authorities.
“The UK is my home. The UK is central to the heritage of my children, and a place I want them to feel at home as much as where they live at the moment in the United States,” Prince Harry stated in a previous statement to the High Court.
Since relocating to California in 2020, Prince Harry and Meghan have brought their children to the UK only once, in 2022, to attend Queen Elizabeth’s Platinum Jubilee celebrations. They have emphasized the importance of maintaining security for their family during visits to the UK, particularly in light of Prince Harry’s experiences and concerns for their safety.
The ruling comes amidst Prince Harry’s father, King Charles, undergoing treatment for cancer. Despite the legal setback, Prince Harry remains committed to pursuing justice through the Court of Appeal, ensuring the safety of his family during future visits to the UK.
