MINISTER KITUTU FINALLY GRANTED BAIL

Reported by Howard Kerry Mwesigwa

The Karamoja Affairs minister Mary Goretti Kitutu, who had been remanded to Luzira government prison on corruption charges, has been granted bail by the Anti-corruption Chief Magistrate Her Worship Joan Aciro . Kitutu, together with her brother and senior assistant secretary, were charged with six counts of loss of public property, corruption, receiving stolen property, and conspiracy to defraud.

The prosecution had alleged that between June 2022 and January 2023, the group caused the loss of public property in the form of 14,500 iron sheets by diverting them from the intended purpose of benefiting the Karamoja community empowerment program for their own benefit. The prosecution also alleged that Kitutu’s brother received 100 iron sheets knowing that they had been feloniously obtained.

Kitutu’s lawyers, led by Michael Wamasebu and Jude Byamukama, had applied for bail on the grounds that their client suffered from heart disease, was of advanced age, and had a permanent place of abode. Kitutu had also offered to surrender her diplomatic passport to the court and presented several sureties.
