KAMPALA, Uganda | The Law Council in Uganda has taken action against professional misconduct within the legal profession by suspending two advocates. Advocate Christopher Buyi Wofuba of Buyi and Company Advocates has been suspended for six months, while Nyafwono Irene Laker of Ekirapa & Company Advocates faces a one-year suspension.
The disciplinary committee of the Law Council convened on September 14th, 2023, and made the decision to suspend these advocates following complaints of professional misconduct filed by the Attorney General.
Advocate Christopher Buyi Wofuba’s suspension for six months reflects the severity of the professional misconduct identified in his practice. This suspension will bar him from representing clients or appearing in courts of law during this period.
Nyafwono Irene Laker, on the other hand, faces a one-year suspension, indicating a more serious breach of professional conduct. The Law Council’s decision is aimed at ensuring accountability and upholding the standards of legal practice in the country.
In response to these suspensions, the Judiciary Chief Registrar has communicated the decisions to all courts of law to enforce the restrictions on the suspended advocates. Advocates who have been suspended from practice are not permitted to appear in court or represent clients.
The Law Council, as the regulatory authority for legal practice in Uganda, plays a vital role in maintaining the integrity of the legal profession. One of its primary responsibilities is to hear complaints of professional misconduct against legal practitioners across the country.
This action underscores the Council’s commitment to maintaining the highest ethical standards within the legal community. It also sends a clear message that professional misconduct will not be tolerated, emphasizing the importance of accountability and integrity in the legal field.
