Mukono, Uganda | The High Court of Uganda at Mukono, under the stewardship of Justice Henry Kawesa, has handed down a 30-year prison sentence to Kirabo Mathew for the murder of Mirembe Desire Jemimah, a medical student at Makerere University. The sentencing, taking into account aggravating and mitigating factors, reflects the court’s considerations of premeditation, violence in the commission of the offense, the need for deterrence, and the potential for the convict’s reform and rehabilitation.
The convict, Kirabo Mathew, had absconded court proceedings since November 3, 2021. The trial proceeded in his absence, and he was subsequently re-arrested on September 15, 2023, awaiting sentencing.
Chief State Attorney Happiness Ainebyona, leading the prosecution from the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions, presented evidence establishing that Kirabo Mathew and the deceased were in a troubled relationship. On July 10, 2015, Kirabo Mathew called Mirembe Desire Jemimah for a meeting at Oasis Mall to discuss their strained relationship, advised by her church minister to sever ties with him. An intense argument ensued at the mall, leading them to board a vehicle driven by Kirabo Mathew.
As they traveled towards Jinja, Kirabo Mathew deviated at Lugazi, inflicted a fatal neck wound on the deceased, and discarded her body near a sugarcane plantation before returning to Kampala.
The prosecution demonstrated that Kirabo Mathew used the deceased’s phone to send misleading messages to her relatives, pretending she was stuck in Jinja with an unfamiliar person. Kirabo Mathew further visited the deceased’s hostel and Deliverance Church to create a false alibi.
Suspicious relatives reported the matter to the police, leading to the discovery of the deceased’s body in Lugazi. Tracking the deceased’s phone records implicated Kirabo Mathew, who later confessed to the crime during a reconstruction of the crime scene. Charged and convicted accordingly, Kirabo Mathew’s sentencing marks a significant development in the pursuit of justice for Mirembe Desire Jemimah.
