JINJA, UGANDA | Gunshots echoed through the precincts of Jinja court on February 15th as a dramatic attempt by two inmates to escape custody unfolded, resulting in one sustaining injuries during the pursuit.
The incident occurred as warders from Kirinya prisons were returning Mr. Ashraf Ssenoga, 25, also known as “Vampire,” and Abel Muwanika, 27, alias “Abusale,” to the suspects’ holding cell. The duo, who were making their fourth appearance before Grade One magistrate, Ms. Anxious Atumanya, faced charges of aggravated robbery following their arrest in December.
Before the escape attempt, the inmates had requested bail, which was denied by Ms. Atumanya, citing the serious nature of their case, triable only by the High Court.
As they were being escorted back to their holding cell, Ssenoga and Muwanika, who were handcuffed together, made a sudden dash for the court gate amidst the chaos of gunshots fired by an officer on central guard. The gunfire prompted the adjournment of ongoing trials, with other warders summoned from adjacent courts to assist in the pursuit.
Despite their attempt to flee, the suspects were apprehended shortly after reaching the court gate. One of them sustained a severe gunshot wound to the mouth, while the other was recaptured unharmed.
Fatima Bayiga, Ssenoga’s wife, expressed concern for her husband’s well-being, noting that he was arrested close to Christmas and has been unable to speak in court. She worries about the potential for new charges and the impact on their family’s livelihood, as Ssenoga is the primary breadwinner.
Prisons spokesperson, Mr. Frank Baine, confirmed that the duo would face additional charges of attempted escape, emphasizing that such actions are criminal. He highlighted the challenges faced by the prison system in maintaining security and preventing escapes, despite vigilant monitoring.
Mr. Baine detailed the events leading to the injury of Muwanika, explaining that an officer fired three shots in an attempt to disable the fleeing inmates. Muwanika sustained injuries to his mouth, jaw, and lips and was promptly evacuated to Jinja Regional Referral Hospital for treatment.
