KAMPALA, April 09, 2024 | Molly Katanga, accused of the murder of her husband Henry Katanga, faced a setback today as the High Court of Kampala, presided over by Justice Isaac Muwata, denied her bail.
The incident in question occurred on November 2, 2023, when Molly Katanga allegedly killed her husband at Mbuya Chwa 2 Road, Nakawa Division. Additionally, Molly’s daughters, Patricia Kakwanza and Martha Nkanzi, are charged as accomplices for allegedly tampering with evidence related to the crime scene.
Despite a plea for temporary release, the court refused bail for Molly Katanga, citing procedural requirements regarding her medical condition. The Luzira medical personnel had yet to provide certified documentation regarding Molly’s injuries, forwarding the request to Mulago Hospital instead. As per legal protocol, certified medical exemption from Luzira Prison is necessary for bail consideration, which superseded the presence of substantial sureties.
Molly’s legal representatives presented a compelling case for her immediate release, emphasizing her poor medical condition due to severe injuries sustained from domestic violence. They highlighted Molly’s role as the sole breadwinner and caregiver for her family, as well as her previous law-abiding conduct. Notable attorneys Peter Kabatsi and Mac Dusma Kabega represented her legal team.
However, prosecution led by Wakooli Samalie contested the bail application, expressing concerns about potential interference with ongoing murder investigations if Molly were released.
“The medical officers from prison have not informed the court that they cannot manage her medical condition in prison medical facilities. With the case set for hearing on July 2, 2024, it is in the interest of justice that the applicant prepares for trial,” remarked the judge. As attention from both the media and the public remains focused on the case, all eyes are on the upcoming trial scheduled for July 2, 2024, where evidence from both sides will be presented.
