JINJA, April 17, 2024 | The High Court in Jinja has disqualified lawyers representing the Uganda Muslim Supreme Council (UMSC) in an election petition concerning Sheikh Ssemambo Abdallah as the acting Mufti of Uganda.
Justice Faridah Shamilah Bukirwa Ntambi ruled that Lawyers Musa Kabega and Adam Kibwanga Makmot, who are members of the UMSC General Assembly, have been disqualified from representing the council in the petition.
“Having found there is justification to believe that the representation of the 4th Respondent by Counsel Musa Kabega and Counsel Adam Kibwanga Makmot, who are members of the General Assembly of the 4th Respondent, will not achieve the ends of Justice and will run counter to the Advocates (Professional Conduct) Regulations to represent them,” Justice Shamilah Bukirwa Ntambi ruled.
Justice Ntambi emphasized that the lawyers should have disqualified themselves from handling the matter professionally and appointed other advocates for representation. Since they failed to do so, the court took the decision to disqualify them.
The ruling stems from a case filed against the Uganda Muslim Supreme Council, accusing Mufti of Uganda Sheikh Shaban Ramadhan Mubagye of mismanaging the affairs of Muslims and the sale of Muslim properties in the country.
