Kampala, 04th August 2023 – Bogere Henry Kibira, a Quality Manager at Great Steel LTD in Ssanga, Matugga, Wakiso district, has found himself at the center of a legal battle at Buganda Road Court. Kibira is facing charges related to the alleged production of steel products that did not meet the quality standards set by the Uganda National Bureau of Standards Act.
The prosecution alleges that in June 2023, Mr. Kibira engaged in the production and supply of 4000 pieces of 12mm ripped steel and 3 pieces of 16mm ripped steel bars to Mitayimbwa Manufacturers LTD, a fellow industry player. However, upon close inspection, these steel products were found to fall short of the stringent quality standards stipulated by the Uganda National Bureau of Standards (UNBS).
Surprisingly, Mr. Kibira initially pleaded guilty to the charges brought against him. However, his defense attorney swiftly challenged this plea, raising concerns about the credibility of the police report submitted as evidence. The defense argued that the report appeared to be dubious, casting doubt on the validity of the charges.
In response to the defense’s objection, Her Worship Gladys Kamasanyu, presiding over the case, emphasized that Mr. Kibira had the right to change his plea in future court appearances, highlighting the importance of a fair and transparent legal process.
The proceedings were adjourned to September 5th, 2023. On this date, brief facts will be presented, and a prosecutor from the Uganda National Bureau of Standards (UNBS) is expected to take over the case.
The key question that hangs in the balance is whether Mr. Kibira’s initial guilty plea will hold firm or if he will opt for a different legal path.
