Getting justice should be as simple as you going to the well, Owiny-Dollo.

Kitgum, Uganda – The Chief Justice of Uganda has said that getting justice should be as simple as you going to the well or the borehole, underscoring the importance of a straightforward and accessible justice system. He made these remarks while presiding over the Kitgum Chief Magistrates Court Open Day at the court’s grounds in Kitgum District. During the event, various judicial officials shared insights on the importance of transparency, collaboration, and ease of access to justice.

Chief Justice Owiny-Dollo highlighted the need for consistent efforts to demystify court processes and promote the rule of law. He emphasized the significance of mutual cooperation among all stakeholders involved in the justice system. “We cannot promote the rule of law on our own; we have to complement one another,” he stated. He also stressed the value of periodic meetings among court personnel, suggesting that solutions to challenges can arise from these discussions, even in the absence of higher-ranking officials.

In line with enhancing the judicial infrastructure, Chief Justice Owiny-Dollo expressed a clear goal: “The goal is to ensure that there is a minimum of a Magistrate Grade I in every county in this country, and in every district, we shall have a Chief Magistrate.” This aspiration aims to reinforce the judiciary’s reach and efficiency across the nation.

Chief Registrar Sarah Langa Siu offered practical guidance to the public, urging them to make use of the court fees poster. The poster provides clear information about the required fees for various court services, ensuring that individuals are well-informed when they engage with the judicial system.

Senior Resident Judge Phillip Odoki emphasized the crucial role that court users play as customers of the justice system. He called for respectful and considerate treatment of court users, comparing them to royalty. “Court users are our customers; we must treat them like kings,” he stated, underscoring the court’s commitment to providing a positive and respectful experience for all those seeking justice.

The Kitgum Chief Magistrates Court Open Day served as an important platform to promote understanding, transparency, and accessibility within the judicial process. The messages conveyed by Chief Justice Alfonse Chigamoy Owiny-Dollo, Chief Registrar Sarah Langa Siu, and Senior Resident Judge Phillip Odoki reflect the judiciary’s dedication to serving the public effectively and fairly. As these efforts continue, the court system moves towards fostering a more accessible and user-friendly environment for all individuals seeking justice.
