KAMPALA, November 23, 2023 | The former managing director of Uganda Railways Corporation (URC), Stanley Ssendegeya, has been charged and remanded over forging academic documents that enabled him to secure the job.
Ssendegeya appeared before Buganda Road Grade One Magistrate Siena Owomugisha on November 22, 2023, and denied the charges of forgery and uttering false documents.
He was arrested by the State House Anti-Corruption Unit after investigations revealed that he had presented fake academic papers to the URC board when he applied for the position of managing director in 2019.
According to the prosecution, Ssendegeya forged a curriculum vitae that elevated him to the status of holding a master’s degree in business administration which is not the case. He also presented false information to recruitment firm, Delloit Uganda Ltd.
He also allegedly uttered the false documents to the URC board, the Ministry of Works and Transport, and the Inspectorate of Government, purporting that they were genuine.
The prosecution further submitted that Ssendegeya’s actions caused financial loss to the government, as he received a monthly salary of Shs 35 million and other benefits as the managing director of URC, a state-owned enterprise that operates and maintains the railway network in the country.
Through his lawyers, Ssendegeya, citing illness applied for bail which the prosecution objected to reasoning that Ssendegeya’s medical documents were wrongly intepreted and required insight medical from a medical professional. The Grade One Magistrate Siena Owomugisha , remanded Ssendegeya to Luzira Prison until November 29th 2023, when his bail application will be heard.
