KAMPALA, April 22, 2024 | The Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP), Jane Frances Abodo, inaugurated a three-day Symposium today at Hotel Africanna. The event, attended by over 400 prosecutors, is centered around the theme “Strengthening Capacity For Prosecution to Counter Organized and Emerging Crimes”.
In her opening address, Abodo emphasized the critical role of the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP) and other prosecutorial agencies in addressing emerging organized crimes. She emphasized the need for prosecutors to maintain high standards of service, ensuring effectiveness, fairness, and transparency in the pursuit of justice.
“With utmost humility, transparency, integrity, and patriotism, we should ensure that we do the right thing and avoid engaging in corrupt tendencies,” Abodo affirmed, highlighting the commitment to serving the public with diligence and integrity.
The Symposium serves as a platform for prosecutors to engage in discussions on current and future challenges facing the prosecution sector. Attendees include representatives from the Justice Law and Order Sector, United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime, United Nations Children’s Fund, Human Trafficking Institute, and the Redeem International.
During the three-day event, the DPP announced a temporary halt to the hearing of criminal cases to allow prosecutors to fully participate in the Symposium, reflecting the significance of the gathering in enhancing prosecutorial capacity.
The symposium promises to facilitate collaboration, knowledge exchange, and strategic planning among prosecutors to effectively combat organized and emerging crimes. It signifies a collective effort towards fostering a justice system that upholds the rule of law and safeguards the rights of all citizens.
