Chief Justice Appoints New Public Relations Officer for the Judiciary

Kampala, Uganda – The Chief Justice of Uganda, Alfonse Chigamoy Owiny-Dollo, has announced the appointment of His Worship Ereemye Jumire James Mawanda as the new Public Relations Officer (PRO) of the Judiciary. The decision was conveyed through a letter dated August 28, 2023.

The appointment of His Worship Ereemye follows the elevation of Justice Jamson Karemani Karemera to the position of Judge of the High Court, relinquishing his role as Deputy Registrar and Public Relations Officer, which he held since 2019.

The Chief Justice’s letter cited Article 133 of the Constitution and Section 3(a) of the Administration of the Judiciary Act as the basis for the assignment, stating, “In exercise of the powers conferred upon the Chief Justice under Article 133 of the Constitution and in accordance with Section 3(a) of the Administration of the Judiciary Act, I hereby assign you as Public Relations Officer of the Judiciary in addition to your duties as a Registrar.”

As the new Public Relations Officer, His Worship Ereemye Jumire James Mawanda will oversee the Registry of Communications and Public Relations. This role entails supervising a team of professional Communications Officers and deputizing the Chief Registrar as the spokesperson for the Judiciary. The Chief Registrar, HW Sarah Langa Siu, welcomed the appointment and expressed confidence in the new PRO’s ability to enhance public awareness and bolster the Judiciary’s image in alignment with the Judiciary Strategic Plan V. She also commended Justice Karemani for his substantial contributions during his tenure as the former PRO.

His Worship Ereemye boasts a distinguished career as a Judicial Officer spanning over 27 years. He has advanced through various roles, including Magistrate Grade III Trainee, Magistrate Grade II, Magistrate Grade I, Chief Magistrate, Deputy Registrar, and Acting Registrar. His professional contributions extend beyond his new role, as he is also a member of the Judiciary Council, representing the Lower Bench. The Judiciary Council serves as an advisory body to the Chief Justice, established under the Administration of the Judiciary Act of 2020. Additionally, His Worship Ereemye holds membership in the Law Council and serves on the Disciplinary Committee of the Law Council. Furthermore, he serves as a Committee Member on the Executive of the Uganda Judicial Officers Association, representing Registrars.

The appointment of His Worship Ereemye Jumire James Mawanda as the new Public Relations Officer signifies a strategic move by the Judiciary to enhance its communication and public outreach efforts, ensuring transparency and effective dissemination of information.
