Kampala, Uganda – In a startling turn of events, former police officer Gilbert Arinaitwe Bwana, known for his past controversial encounter with Dr. Kizza Besigye, has become the focal point of a new legal dispute. Accused of aggravated trafficking, Arinaitwe’s history has taken a darker turn, thrusting him into a case that has ignited nationwide interest and highlighted the intricacies of the legal process.
Years after his widely-publicized altercation with Dr. Besigye, Arinaitwe now faces serious charges of aggravated trafficking, a grave offense that has shocked the nation. The unfolding narrative has unveiled unsettling details, as a confidentially identified 23-year-old woman steps forward as a victim. She alleges that Arinaitwe played a role in her trafficking, subjecting her to sexual exploitation and coercion.
According to the prosecution’s case, Arinaitwe and his alleged accomplices allegedly recruited, transported, and unlawfully confined the victim against her will. Her vulnerability was reportedly exploited for their personal gain, leading to a harrowing experience of sexual assault, confinement without proper sustenance, and withheld wages.
Arinaitwe, appearing before Chief Magistrate Ronald Kayizzi at Buganda Road Court, staunchly denies the charge of aggravated trafficking. Represented by defense lawyer James Njogu, Arinaitwe’s legal team is seeking bail on the grounds that he is the primary provider for his family. However, the prosecution, led by Senior State Attorney Ivan Kyazze, opposes the bail request, citing incomplete documentation as a reason. In a recent court session, Chief Magistrate Kayizzi, ordered his remand in Luzira Prison until August 18th. The date is set for the anticipated rendering of the bail decision.
As the investigation progresses, a deeply distressing narrative has emerged, shedding light on the victim’s traumatic ordeal. The survivor’s courage, along with the intervention of a friend, ultimately led to her escape from captivity and the reporting of the egregious crimes committed against her.
Arinaitwe now faces a litany of severe charges, including sexual exploitation, forced labor, and involuntary servitude. These allegations represent a stark departure from his prior notoriety.
