A credit officer employed at Post Bank’s Mbarara branch has been incarcerated as he confronts serious allegations of abusing his position and engaging in corrupt practices. Mr. Danson Nahurira, 47, found himself before Grade One Magistrate Esther Asiimwe at the Anti-Corruption Court, where he was formally charged and subsequently remanded. Although Nahurira vehemently denies the accusations leveled against him, ongoing investigations are yet to reach a conclusion.

The prosecution, led by Gertrude Apio, contends that Nahurira flagrantly violated the trust bestowed upon him by his employer. The alleged incident occurred on July 27, 2022, at Post Bank Uganda, where it is believed that Nahurira received an illicit sum of Shs500,000 as an inducement for issuing a financial card to Detective Sergeant Samuel Liwa, disregarding the established protocols in the process. The revelation of these improprieties was brought to light by a whistle-blower, prompting the intervention of the State House Anti-Corruption Unit.

Further investigations have uncovered a disturbing pattern, with Nahurira allegedly soliciting bribes ranging from Shs1 million to Shs2 million from individuals seeking financial cards, enabling them to obtain additional loans. This unethical scheme has resulted in significant financial losses, as borrowers took advantage of multiple loans from Post Bank and other institutions.

Ironically, the whistle-blower according to the Anti Corruption Unit is an active participant in this fraudulent network and is presently facilitating the acquisition of a financial card for another individual through similar illicit means. Mr. Danson Nahurira is set to remain in custody until June 23 when he is due to reappear in Court.
