OXFORD, April 04, 2024 | James Sheen, a 39-year-old man, pleaded guilty to charges of burglary and conspiracy at Oxford Crown Court on Tuesday. The charges stemmed from the theft of a golden toilet worth $6 million from an English home, specifically Blenheim Palace, where Winston Churchill was born.
The stolen gold toilet, known as “America,” was a centerpiece of an exhibition by Italian artist Maurizio Cattelan titled “Victory is Not an Option.” It was installed at Blenheim Palace in 2019 but was stolen just days after the exhibition opened, causing significant damage to the place within the building where it had been displayed.
James Sheen, appearing in court via video from Five Wells Prison, where he is already serving a sentence for stealing tractors and high-value trophies from the National Horse Racing Museum in Newmarket, confessed to his involvement in the burglary.
The significance of “America” extended beyond its monetary value. Cattelan had described it as a piece of art meant to challenge societal norms, offering the same functionality as any other toilet but made of solid gold. It was installed next to Churchill’s birthplace, adding to its historical and symbolic value.
Notably, “America” had previously gained attention when the White House, during Donald Trump’s presidency, requested to borrow a different piece of art and was offered the golden toilet instead.
While James Sheen admitted his guilt, three other individuals – Michael Jones, Frederick Sines (also known as Frederick Doe), and Bora Guccuck – entered not guilty pleas. They face charges related to burglary and conspiracy to transfer criminal property. Their trial is scheduled for February next year.
The theft of the golden toilet not only resulted in financial loss but also stirred public interest due to its unique nature and the historical significance of its location. As the legal proceedings unfold, the story continues to captivate the attention of the public, shedding light on the complexities of art theft and the pursuit of justice.
