Reports from the Judiciary in Uganda indicate that Supreme Court Judge, Lady Justice Mary Stella Arach-Amoko died today morning at Nakasero Hospital. The statement released by the judiciary indicates that Amoko breathed his last at 4:00 am on 17th June 2023 but did not go into the details of what caused the judge’s death.
Mary Stella Arach-Amoko was appointed as a Justice of the Supreme Court of Uganda in 2013 after rising through the ranks within the Judiciary. She was first appointed to the judiciary in 1997 as a High Court Judge and later elevated to the Court of Appeal in 2010.
From 2006 until 2008, Amoko served as a judge of the East African Court of Justice and later as a Deputy Principal Judge of the First Instance Division at the same court from 2008 until 2013.  Arach-Amoko served in the Uganda Attorney General’s chambers from 1979 until 1997 when she was appointed to the bench as a High Court judge. In 2010, she was one of the candidates considered by the Judicial Services Commission, for appointment as the Chief Justice of Uganda.
Between 2018 and 2020, Justice Arach-Amoko served as the Chairperson of the Management Committee of the Law Development Centre. At the time of her, she was also serving as a member of the Judicial Service Commission, a body responsible for the appointment of judicial officers in Uganda.
She will be remembered as a jurist with impeccable skills for critically reviewing disputes and delivering well-reasoned judgments. May her soul rest in peace.
