Eight people have been charged with assaulting a police officer during the protests over the Karamoja iron sheets scandal. Moses Bukenya, Nelson Ndyasiima, Sanyu Najjuma, Sharif Kawooya, Augustine Batanda, Gilbert Nayebare, Shafia Ssegawa, and Teddy Ssemakula were arraigned before the Grade One Magistrate Asuman Muhumuza on charges of assaulting assistant superintendent of police (ASP) Flavia Nsimenta.
In the charges presented, Court heard that on March 28, 2023, at Ben Kiwanuka street in Kampala district, the accused persons assaulted assistant superintendent of police (ASP) Flavia Nsimenta a police officer who at that time was executing her duty. After the charges were read to the accused, the prosecution led by Jean Nayebare told the court that investigations into this matter are still ongoing and requested the court to adjourn the matter and send the accused on remand. The accused’s lawyer Samuel Wanda on his part informed the court that his clients required medical attention since they were tortured while in Police custody. This prompted the Magistrate to order the Prisons Services to ensure that the accused are given medical care. He remanded the accused to Luzira prison until April 12 as investigations into the matter continue.
The accused who claim to be members of the Revolution against Dictatorship (RAD) and Torture Survivors Movement pressure groups were arrested on Tuesday 28th March during a protest where they demanded that the government arrests the political leaders involved in the Karamoja iron sheets scandal.
