KAMPALA, January 09,2024 | In a resolute stance defending the sanctity of judicial independence, Chief Justice Alfonse Owiny Dollo has spoken out against the interference of court processes, emphasizing the vital role it plays in maintaining the integrity of the legal system.
The Chief Justice’s comments were prompted by media reports revealing the actions of Ntungamo Resident District Commissioner, Godfrey Mucunguzi, who seemingly justifies meddling in court matters under the guise of administrative interventions.
“While the Judiciary recognizes the importance of robust public discourse and debate, such discussions should not infringe upon its autonomy,” asserted Chief Justice Owiny Dollo in a press statement. He highlighted that attempts to influence court decisions or cast doubt on the credibility of the legal process erode public trust and undermine the very essence of justice.
In a plea for respect towards court orders, Chief Justice Owiny Dollo remarked, “Where a court has issued an order, it should be respected. Where one is dissatisfied with the court, the law provides for avenues of redress.” This underscores the importance of upholding the rule of law and allowing the legal mechanisms in place to address grievances.
The Chief Justice further underscored the necessity for all stakeholders and the general public to allow the courts to operate independently, free from undue external interference. This, he believes, is crucial in maintaining the rule of law and protecting the rights and liberties of all citizens.
In a call to action, Chief Justice Owiny Dollo urged relevant authorities to thoroughly investigate any allegations of interference in court processes and take appropriate actions to safeguard the independence of the Judiciary. By doing so, he hopes to ensure that justice is served impartially and without compromise.
